The isomorphism problem for classes of computable fields
نویسنده
چکیده
Theories of classification distinguish classes with some good structure theorem from those for which none is possible. Some classes (dense linear orders, for instance) are non-classifiable in general, but are classifiable when we consider only countable members. This paper explores such a notion for classes of computable structures by working out several examples. One motivation is to see whether some classes whose set of countable members is very complex become classifiable when we consider only computable members. We follow recent work by Goncharov and Knight in using the degree of the isomorphism problem for a class to distinguish classifiable classes from nonclassifiable. For arbitrary fields — even real closed fields — we show that the isomorphism problem is Σ 1 complete (the maximum possible), and for others we show that it is of relatively low complexity. We show that the isomorphism problem for algebraically closed fields, Archimedean real closed fields, or vector spaces is Π 3 complete.

متن کاملIsomorphism and Classification for Countable Structures
We introduce a topology on the space of all isomorphism types represented in a given class of countable models, and use this topology as an aid in classifying the isomorphism types. This mixes ideas from effective descriptive set theory and computable structure theory, extending concepts from the latter beyond computable structures to examine the isomorphism problem on arbitrary countable struc...
متن کاملAlgebraic number fields
By an algebraic number field we mean a subfield of the algebraic numbers, or an isomorphic copy of such a field. Here we consider questions related to the complexity of determining isomorphism between algebraic number fields. We characterize the algebraic number fields with computable copies. For computable algebraic number fields, we give the complexity of the index sets. We show that the isom...
متن کاملThe computable embedding problem
Calvert [3], [4], [5] calculated the complexity of the computable isomorphism problem for a number of familiar classes of structures. Rosendal suggested that it might be interesting to do the same for the computable embedding problem. By computable isomorphism problemand computable embedding problemwe mean the di¢ culty of determining whether there exists an isomorphism (embedding) between ...
متن کاملComputable Transformations of Structures
The isomorphism problem, for a class of structures, is the set of pairs of structures within that class which are isomorphic to each other. Isomorphism problems have been well studied for many classes of computable structures. Here we consider isomorphism problems for broader classes of countable structures, using Turing functionals and applying the notions of finitary and countable computable ...
